  • MR AHMED AS A RESEARCHER

    • Research for Thesis: Research work in Eastbourne was funded by the South East Thames Regional Health Authority through the Locally Organised Research Scheme (LORS). This grant was for three years to investigate alternative energy sources in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Mr Ahmed’s project was to define the role of transurethral microwave thermotherapy with urethral cooling using high-energy software (Prostatron Version 2.5?). The trial protocol was based on the American Urological Association’s (AUA) guidelines for the investigation of devices for BPH treatment.

This was a prospective, randomised, controlled, parallel study. Thirty patients each were entered into two groups (TURP and TUMT). Multiple efficacy parameters were measured at base line and 6 months after the treatment. The study was completed in December 1994.

Results of the main project were presented at the British Association of Urological Surgeons’ annual meeting in June 1995 and published in the British Journal of Urology in 1997. The data generated was also analysed for the effect of microwaves on the detrusor activity and sexual function. A paper based on this data was presented to the AUA’s annual meeting in Orlando in May 1996.
